Los autores ponen de relieve la influencia que el krausismo tuvo en la organización de la universidad española y, en concreto, cómo la propuesta de Ahrens –cuyo manual puede considerarse la biblia de varias generaciones de universitarios españoles– se materializó en la experiencia del Sexenio Democrático: pocas veces el contenido de un manual ha tenido una traducción normativa tan completa. De esta forma, España no solo participó en el debate europeo sobre la libertad de enseñanza sino que en algunos aspectos estuvo en la vanguardia.
Merece la pena dar a conocer este esquema general y estas bases interpretativas, con el fin de entender el desarrollo de la libertad de enseñanza en España y en Europa, durante este período.

Mathieu Deflem is Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina, USA, and previously held positions at Kenyon College and Purdue University. His interests include international police cooperation, surveillance, popular culture and sociological theory, censorship, and law. To date, he has authored four books, including The Policing of Terrorism (2010) and Sociology of Law (2008).
