El presente volumen ha sido redactado por juristas de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia y de médicos de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Complutense. Trata de ofrecer un manual orientado a estudiantes y profesionales de la Criminología. La Medicina legal y la Medicina forense tienen una enorme y creciente relevancia y han estado tradicionalmente presentes en los estudios de Criminología en España.

La Medicina forense trata de orientar a Jueces y Tribunales en decisiones en las que se requiere conocimiento médico (Parte II). Esta área de conocimiento es inabarcable y no es posible ofrecer un tratamiento exhaustivo de la misma en un plan de estudios de Criminología. La Medicina legal en sentido estricto se remite a instituciones jurídicas que regulan cuestiones relacionadas con la Medicina como la eutanasia, los medicamentos, el ADN en el proceso probatorio o el consentimiento informado (Parte III). A veces estudia problemas del Derecho que requieren conocimientos médicos, a veces es al revés y a menudo lo que se investiga requiere conocimientos de ambas materias y de algunas otras. De nuevo nos encontramos ante un área inabarcable cuyo tratamiento exhaustivo queda descartado en un Grado en Criminología, pero que no por ello debe abandonarse.

Los principios informadores del presente libro son que Medicina legal y Medicina forense son materias de alguna manera distintas (Parte I); que en un Grado en Criminología no es posible ofrecer un tratamiento exhaustivo y sistemático de las mismas; que, por lo tanto, se impone un enfoque fragmentario, aunque al mismo tiempo busque la excelencia; y, finalmente, que los contenidos deben adaptarse, deben estar guiados por los intereses criminológicos –si no queremos que la famosa multidisciplinariedad se traduzca en un batiburrillo inconexo–.

Finalmente, Corbella nos recuerda importantes figuras con contribuciones significativas tanto a la Medicina legal y forense como a la Criminología: Cubí, Lombroso o Lacassagne.
